This past week, Number Four Street of Our Lady has been mentioned in two papers in the Central Florida area. The reviews began with Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel who called it “a must see.” It was then written about in The Heritage Florida Jewish News who had this to say about the film.

In this powerful and beautifully made film, survivors and their descendants connect with former neighbors as they revisit Sokal. The circle is completed as this remarkable yet little known story of compassion and bravery is finally told.

Be sure to come out to see this highly buzzed about film at this year’s Florida Film Festival!

Review: News Record

A lengthy, in-depth review by Michael Goldberger was posted last summer in several prominent newspapers in New Jersey, in the News Record and the Patriot.

For although the documentarians never lose sight of their particular focus, their objective yet passionate recounting achieves universal worth. And while we become as intimate with the personae as such narration allows, it’s apparent their stories must now assume a vital part in precluding a reoccurrence of the tragedy that befell them.

The reviewer appreciates the universal themes portrayed over the course of the film, as well as the technical aspects, specifically mentioning how well the film is edited to maintain an intriguing pace.

Review: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

This review describes some behind-the-scenes events, like how they raised 100,000 dollars to travel to Europe and Israel to shoot the film, as well as how the idea for the film was born.

It was that history that came to mind when ex-reporter Maltz expressed an interest in filmmaking to colleague Bird, who suggested she start with a five-minute short.

Maltz eventually countered with, “What are you doing next summer? You want to come with me to Eastern Europe and Israel? I’ve got an idea for a film, but it’s probably going to have to be longer than five minutes.”

Number Four Street of Our Lady was screened at the Rhode Island International Film Festival last August. This review mentions several awards won by the film, including the grand prize for best feature documentary at the Rhode Island festival.

Review: Penn State

The filmmakers, Barbara Bird, Judy Maltz, and Richie Sherman, professors at Penn State, had a screening at their university this past November, with a review being published in their student newspaper, Onward State. The reviewer has this to say about the film:

It is impossible not to be moved by this story. Whether it’s the old footage from the German occupation, or the moment when one of the women visits the brick factory where her father was killed by the Nazis over 60 years before, it is a beautiful piece that tells a story of lost childhoods, courage in the face of death, and the importance of family.
